How to Join CY

CY collaborates with all Chittenden South schools to implement "research-based" substance abuse and violence prevention programs. These are curricula that have been tried and tested to prove their effectiveness at reducing risky behaviors.

At the K through 8 level — to read our schools are using TWO different substance abuse prevention curricula:

  • "Know Your Body," a comprehensive health program for grades K-6 that covers topics such as alcohol and other drugs, nutrition, conflict resolution, and safety; and,
  • "Life Skills Training," a program for 6th - 8th graders that builds skills to help students make healthy choices.

In addition, all schools have the "Second Step" violence prevention curriculum. Guidance counselors are using lessons from this curriculum to teach students in grades K -8 how to manage conflict, deal with anger, stop bullying and promote respect at school.

At the high school, prevention is integrated into various classes such as Project Adventure, Science, English and Social Studies. CVU High School also uses the research-based program "Teenage Health Teaching Modules" at the 9th grade level.
