WCAX-TV NEWS STORY ON MOCK TRIAL
Thinking Outside the Bottle – Pre-Prom Event to Discourage Underage Drinking
Did you know that more than 50% of all Chittenden South seniors reported drinking alcohol in the past 30 days? And 34% reported "binge drinking"—meaning they drank five or more drinks of alcohol in a row within a couple of hours? (Data from the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Survey for CSSU.) Every thirty minutes one person is killed in this country by an impaired driver, and approximately 5,000 people under age 21 die as a result of underage drinking. In addition to fatalities, alcohol use is linked to physical violence, sexual assault, and a host of other issues. To raise awareness about these important issues and provide students with a realistic picture of the consequences,
CY-Connecting Youth will be providing an important pre-prom event designed to discourage underage drinking. On Thursday, May 6th at 8:15 am and again at 10:00 am in the CVU Auditorium, CY will sponsor a “Mock Trial” to raise awareness about the legal consequences that can occur if a person chooses to drive impaired. The trial is geared toward juniors and seniors at CVU and tells the story, based on real events of a mock crash the previous year, of a local student who caused a motor vehicle crash while under the influence of alcohol.
