CY sponsors many different kinds of events for students, parents and community members. Here is what is coming up! SUMMER 2008 ACTING UP Theater Improv Workshop for current 6th through 8th graders! Do you like the tv show Whose Line Is It Anyway? Do you enjoy acting and making up skits? On Saturday, June 21st from 10 am to 4 pm at the Shelburne Town Gym CY will host a full day theater improv workshop for middle schoolers. CVU High School students from the See Why Improv Troupe will lead warm up games and activities throughout the day. The workshop will provide youth with an outlet for creative expression, while examining such issues as communication, peer pressure and media influences. The cost for the workshop is only $20 for Chittenden South students ($30 for youth outside of our District) and includes lunch and snacks. Space is limited and registration is required. For more information contact Dayna Scott at 383-1211 or e-mail dscott@cssu.org. CVU Summer Camp for Incoming Freshman. This is a "can't miss" experience for all 8th graders who will be attending CVU next year. The purpose of the camp is to provide a positive transition experience, allowing students to make new friends and have fun exploring new interests. For more details, call Duncan at 482-7194 or e-mail Duncan at duncan@cvuhs.org. QUESTION THE MESSAGE Campaign to reduce underage drinking. The alcohol industry claims their products are only for adults who can drink them legally, yet they develop products that appeal to youth (like alco-pops) and they target media to young people! Join CY and the Vermont Department of Health in supporting this campaign to get at the truth of the matter. Students are encouraged to visit www.questionthemessage.com to participate in this campaign and win cool FREE prizes (think I-pods)! Also look for radio and television ads promoting this campaign. "Making A Difference with Youth"Training for School Staff and Interested Community Members. This two-day, comprehensive and interactive workshop will take place on Thursday, August 14th and Friday, August 15th, at CVU High School. While it focuses on substance abuse prevention, it also covers other important topics such as fostering resiliency and promoting developmental assets in youth; improving school climate; and preventing risky behaviors. For more information, please call Dayna at 383-1211 or e-mail dscott@cssu.org. MENTORS NEEDED FOR CHITTENDEN SOUTH YOUTH!Connecting Youth Mentoring for middle school students has been thriving in our school community, but more volunteers are needed NOW to meet the number of requests for mentors! By spending just one hour each week, you can develop a one-on-one relationship with a middle school student that will bring rewards to both you and your young friend. Connecting Youth Mentoring serves 5th through 8th graders from Chittenden South who may want a little extra adult attention in their lives. Mentors and their student mentees spend a regularly scheduled hour together each week while school is in session. They participate in activities of their choosing on school grounds, including games, arts and crafts, sports, cooking, and conversation. On-going mentor training and support is provided. You could be a mentor, too! If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact the Mentoring Coordinator closest to you:
