learn more about being a mentor
What youth have to say...
|
What Mentors have to say...● “Seeing positive changes.”
● “Getting a big smile when you arrive and hearing that the mentoring hour is the best hour of his week.” ● “Gaining insight into my mentee’s life and what it is like to be in middle school.” ● “Doing a variety of activities, laughing, and having fun.” ● “Happiness in knowing that I made the life of someone else better!” |
Mentoring Works!
A Child Trends review of youth mentoring programs concluded that “mentored youth are likely to have fewer absences from school, better attitudes toward school, fewer incidents of hitting others, less drug and alcohol use, more positive attitudes toward their elders and toward helping in general, and improved relationships with their parents.”
In 2011, nationally-recognized expert, Dr. Susan Weinberger, reviewed and assessed more than 50 mentoring programs across Vermont. In her evaluation of CY Mentoring, she shared: "I have been thinking of the best way to describe your program. When I created school-based mentoring 25 years ago, I envisioned that replication sites would follow quality standards, never cease to keep mentees at the center, create a mentor-rich

climate at the school(s) where the program exists and ensure that every staff member of schools embraces the program and supports it… Thank you for fulfilling my dream. You are truly inspirational."
And, finally, here are some thoughts on mentoring from a former participant, now in his 20’s: “Through my CY mentoring relationship, I learned that people, no matter their age, want to learn about one another…My mentor and I got along famously and were able to keep a friendship that stayed strong till his recent passing. It is from my mentorship that I explored many of the concepts and ideas that have become infused as part of me in my young adult life.”

Williston Central School Mentor Kitchen Renovation CompletedWCS CYM celebrates a huge milestone: the official completion of our "WCS Mentoring Home Kitchen."
It all started with an off-the-charts generous donation from Shona of top quality ovens and a refrigerator that we would never have been able to consider without her. What followed was a miraculous coming together of all the partners needed to create a customized kitchen around those tremendous resources. We want to thank the following individuals for giving so generously of their time, talents, resources, and effort to make this project come out so right and so beautifully. John Baggs Andrew Becher and Curtis Lumber Junior Gauthier Shona Mossey Lothrop Greg Marino Christine Lloyd Newberry Josie Palmer Leavitt Bob Pattison Wayne Reed Lyall Smith Peggy Stowe Two magnanimous donors from our mentoring community who wish to remain anonymous |

international cy mentoring connections at wcs!
In early April, CY Mentoring pairs hosted the eight students from China visiting Williston Central School. Our CY Mentees were wonderful ambassadors for Connecting Youth and their school, welcoming their guests into their mentoring hours. Together, these eight trios created "how we fit together puzzle pieces" capturing both commonalities and difference. And they shared favorite games, crafts, and sports.
Shelburne Community School Mentoring Pizza Party
There was some great memories and fun to be had at this years SCS CY Mentoring Pizza Party, as you can see from the photos. It is a time to being all the mentors and their mentees together to have some fun, socialize with eachother. Mentoring makes such a difference to these students.

HCS MENTORING DINNER
Celebrating January mentoring month 2018

In celebration of Mentoring Month, Williston Central School created a special display in the schools lobby to honor their fifty-eight CY Mentors. So much talent and generosity came together to make this display possible.
What a privilege it is to be a part of this village that cares so much about its children.
We want to thank ALL our Mentors at all our schools for doing what they do!
- Micaela Wallace and her mentee of four years, Liz LaDue, collaborated for a year on the design for this display. Liz had a hand in every step of its creation.
- Jess Haskins came to me on the first day of school with her vision for our 2018 poster. Local professional photographer and 7th year CY Mentor, Dave Schmidt, donated his time and talents to make that vision a reality.
- Ben Ghobadi and his PrintTech team in Williston stepped up to print our posters on top quality photographic paper, at no charge.
What a privilege it is to be a part of this village that cares so much about its children.
We want to thank ALL our Mentors at all our schools for doing what they do!

CY Mentoring is one of the largest school-based mentoring programs in Vermont, serving 145 5th – 8th graders across the Champlain Valley School District. CY Mentoring promotes one-to-one relationships between middle school students and caring adult volunteers at Charlotte Central, Hinesburg Community, Shelburne Community and Williston Central Schools. The program began as a pilot in Williston in 1998 and expanded across the district in 2003. Program participants spend quality time with their mentors for one hour a week on school grounds, for a minimum of one year. While the commitment is just for one year, many mentors and their students enjoy their time together so much that they continue through 8th grade graduation.
