The legal drinking age in Vermont is 21. Plain
and simple.
Vermont's Zero Tolerance Laws say if you are
under 21, don't drink or your driver's license can be revoked.
A blood alcohol content of as little as .02 percent
means you are breaking the law. For most people, .02 is as little as
one beer, one glass of wine, or one mixed drink. For some it's even less.
Breaking Vermont's Zero Tolerance Law means:
Your driver's license is suspended for six months.
You must successfully complete the Drinking
Driver Rehabilitation Program. Cost: $300.00 or more.
Your license may be further suspended by the
Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, or your parents, until you reach the
age of 18.
If your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is over
.08% you may also be charged under the adult DUI laws.
If you break the law a second time, your license
is suspended for one year or until you reach age 21, whichever is longer.
Your insurance company may not renew your policy.
You will have to be insured through a special pool and your premiums
will be significantly higher. If you are on your parents' policy, the
same thing may happen to them. Insurance is mandatory in Vermont.
Driving or not, if you're under 21 and are caught
using a false ID or in possession of alcohol you may be required to:
successfully complete the CRASH school
pay a fine of up to $500.00
serve a jail term
Want to keep your license? It's pretty simple.
If you're under 21, don't drink. PERIOD.
What parents should know:
You cannot legally serve alcohol to any person
under 21 years of age under any circumstances, even if you are in your
own home and even with their parents' permission.
Talk to your children about alcohol and
the law. Be at home when your children have a party and do not provide
alcohol or allow drinking.
You are your children's role model. Set
a good example. Adopt a Zero Tolerance policy whenever you drive.
A Message for all Vermont:
Alcohol-related crashes are among the
leading cause of teenage deaths. Help enforce Vermont's Zero Tolerance
Law and help save lives.
Always drive safe and sober, no matter
what age you are.
Always buckle up. It's your best defense
against an impaired driver.
Zero, Nada, None. Not Even One... If You're
Under 21.
